Greater potential, microencapsulated.
Microencapsulation can be used to deliver everything from improved nutrition to extended shelf life. In fact, it’s one of the greatest opportunities you have to expand your brand’s potential.
As the leading provider of microencapsulated solutions in food and feed, Maxx is the perfect partner to help pump up your product portfolio.
How it works
Using a highly modified proprietary fluid bed arrangement, we cloak the active ingredients in your product with a protective food-grade shell the size of a human hair. This creates a barrier to preserve the ingredients during food processing—and the ability to release them at just the right moment for maximum effectiveness.
What it can do
By controlling the release of certain ingredients, microencapsulation gives you the power to:
- Protect shelf life
- Prevent moisture pickup and make ingredients free-flowing
- Enhance flavor and quality
- Mask off taste or odors
- Fortify through the selective release of nutrients
- Deliver functional ingredients
- Provide ingredient stability
- Prevent ingredient interaction
- Enhance the bioavailability of nutrients
- Act as a delivery system or facilitate delivery
Not all microencapsulates are created equally
Here are five easy ways to check the quality of your microencapsulated ingredients:
- Do a water test. Pour a spoonful of the material into a clean container of water. If, after 8-12 hours, most of the particles are still on top, then you have a quality product. But if, after 4 hours, the ingredients fall to the bottom, they will not deliver according to expectations.
- Do a taste test. Put a small amount of the material on your tongue for 1-2 minutes. (Don’t chew!) If a bitter, salty, sweet, acidic or metallic taste comes through, then you know that the coating is not protecting the ingredient.
-
Use a microscope. Is each ingredient particle coated evenly? Are there holes in particles? Are they sticking together? These are all markers for premature release and product failure.
- Check the release rate. Does the ingredient coating maintain the essential dissolution characteristics that support the most effective release?
- Ask yourself: Is the ingredient delivering? Is microencapsulation a core area of focus for the provider? Is performance guaranteed? If you’re having issues, it may be time to look elsewhere.
